Join Us To Awaken The Dragons!

Dotting of the Eye - starts at approximately 6pm. A traditional ceremony to celebrate the opening of the festival during which the pupil of each dragon's eye is painted in so the dragons can see. With another stroke of a brush, paint is added to their tongues so the dragons can breathe, now the dragons are ready to race for us!

Blessing of the Boats - A blessing from Rev. Monsignor Michael Wilson, pastor at Our Lady Star of the Sea, for a safe and jubilant festival.

Adopt a Dragon -  Visit our Store page to find out how you can adopt a real dragon!

Dragons will also be available for purchase on race day, Sat., Aug. 17, 2019.

All donations benefit SMCR's programs for individuals with developmental differences.

All events listed above will take place at: Our Lady Star of the Sea Historic Church, 14400 Solomons Island Rd., Solomons, Maryland.

First Race Starts At 9:00am

  • Dragon Dance, Music, Craft and Food Vendors, Fun Activities.
  • The Dragonnette's Nest: A family activity area for kids and adults with dragon face painting, a scavenger hunt and more.
  • Parade of Teams.

The day begins with the Festival Parade starting in the parking area at Alexander Lane, proceeding through the Team Village & ending at the Gazebo.  As the parade passes by you'll have the opportunity to cheer for your favorite team and see the paddlers decked out in their kooky costumes. Don't forget to keep your eyes open for the team drummers who have even crazier costumes than their team-mates. Everyone's attention will then be focused on the Gazebo as the National Anthem is sung and the Presentation of Colors takes place. After the Colors are retired the first races will start. Around noon we'll take a break for lunch, allowing time for everyone to visit the many food and artisan vendors in our Vendor's Village. After the lunch break the excitement continues with the final races and we'll wrap up the day with the Awards Ceremony at the Gazebo. We're sure you'll want to stick around to see if your favorite team is in the winners circle and, of course, make plans to celebrate at a local restaurant!

The Solomons Island Dragon Boat Festival is a fun place to bring the whole family!

Take some time to visit our vendors area located on the grounds of Our Lady Star of the Sea Historic Church, where you'll find loads of Artisans, Merchants, Food Vendors and Fun Activities. AND don't forget to visit the "Team Village" to check out the team tents, costumes and fun activities.

For Everyone's Safety:

Please remind family & friends- the best place to view the races is from the riverwalk.

If you choose to view the races from the water :

You must remain anchored when the dragon boats are on the race course - The race area is a no wake zone.
