More About Dragons and Dragon Boating
Dragon Boating is one of the world's fastest growing team water sports. Originating in China 2,500 years ago, this ancient Chinese tradition has now been transformed into an exciting, modern water sport and is now enjoyed in more than 35 countries.
The Dragon has a very symbolic meaning for the Chinese. A classic dragon has the head of an ox; a deer's antlers; the mane of a horse; the body and scales of a snake; the claws of an eagle and the tail of a fish. With its strength and power the Dragon rides the clouds in the sky and commands the wind, mist and rain.
The Dragon Boat is deeply embedded in China's 'Dragon' culture, with each boat having an ornately carved dragon's head at the Bow and a tail at the Stern. The hull is painted with the Dragon's scales. The paddles symbolically represent the claws.
Dragon Boating is heavily reliant on timing and teamwork and success depends upon how well the team works together. Due to its strength to bring teams together, dragon boating is exceptionally popular with corporate, community and civic organizations- and it's coming back to Solomons Island for it's fourth year!
"Dragon boat racing is so full of energy and color,
it's no wonder people are attracted to it.'"
